My solution to this was to cap file size on image upload and run compression tools (Set to about 65% quality) on the file before "saving it".
The site took me around 4-5 days to make and features my default FCP single point of entry system as well as an admin control panel for updating the about me, contact me, password and uploading images. There are some rather smooth effects on hovers and on the scrolling image gallery that I wrote myself. These were achieved through CSS3 transition, I used .5s of a transition then simply set the opacity to 0 to fade the image out, changed the source of the image and ranked the opacity back up 100%. This gave me a really nice fading effect.
You can see the site here.
